Impact
Key Releases
ERIE publishes the Erie Leading Indicator (ELI) quarterly and the ERIE Guide to the Economy every couple of years. Additionally, we issue monthly general releases on topics of interest to the Erie community.
Key Events
ERIE hosts an annual conference on the Penn State Behrend campus each spring that gives us an overview of the national, international, and regional economies, and provides up-to-date forecasts for the Erie area.

Dr. Louie, our director since 2014, is an Associate Professor of Economics at Penn State Behrend, specializing in international trade and finance, labor market economics, and the economy of China. He earned his B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since joining the faculty in 1984, he has received the College’s Council of Fellows Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Guy W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Academic Advising.
Dr. Louie regularly teaches courses in International Trade and Finance, the Economics of Labor Markets, and Principles of Macroeconomics. He has also designed and taught a study-abroad course titled “China in the Global Economy: History, Culture, and Society.”
He has served as a Fulbright Scholar in China and a visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies. Dr. Louie has presented his research at over 25 regional, national, and international conferences, including venues in China, France, and the UK. His published work appears in professional journals such as the International Journal of Finance and Economics, Managerial and Decision Economics, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Pennsylvania Economic Review, among others.
